Dr. Amanda Smith-Demers

Registered Psychologist and Owner of MINDset

Hi! Thank you so much for visiting MINDset!

I started MINDset Psychology almost 10 years ago now, out of a desire to help people. I chose the name MINDset , as I am a very strength-based and neuroaffirming psychologist, and I think our MINDset is so incredibly important. When we are able to change and shape the way that we approach different aspects of our life, we can see the world through a more positive lens. When I approach assessment, I love to learn about you/your child, and your family before diving into the assessment process. What types of things do they love? What are their favourite things? What are your favourite things about them? I can then use all of these wonderful things to guide my assessment process, and any subsequent recommendations. The key is to use those things that we love, and are good at, to help in those areas that might be more difficult for us. â€‹

My Story

Dr. Amanda Smith-Demers
Registered Psychologist

Growing up in Calgary, with the mountains always in view, I developed a strong connection to both community and nature—values that continue to shape my work today. Although I did not always know I would become a psychologist, a natural curiosity about people and a desire to support others guided my path. One pivotal summer, working alongside Autistic individuals, I found my passion: celebrating and supporting neurodivergent communities.

Over the past 18 years, I have been privileged to walk alongside children, youth, and families—particularly those with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other forms of neurodivergence. My academic journey led me to earn both a Master of Science (MSc, 2013) and a Doctorate (PhD, 2018) in School and Applied Child Psychology at the University of Calgary, where my research and clinical focus deepened around ASD, mental health, assessment practices, and advocacy for LGBTQ+ individuals.

At MINDset Psychology, I have offered comprehensive psychological assessments for children, adolescents, and adults. My approach is collaborative, strength-based, neuroaffirming, and tailored to each individual and family. Whether through psychoeducational assessment, consultation with caregivers and educators, or mental health interventions, I strive to create a safe, compassionate, and inclusive environment for all. I believe every assessment should serve not just as a tool for understanding challenges, but as a guide to recognizing the whole individual—their abilities, talents, and potential.

My professional experiences span public, private, and rural school settings, as well as work within not-for-profit agencies and crisis response teams. I specialize in the assessment of learning disabilities, ADHD, intellectual disabilities, mood and anxiety concerns, and other neurodevelopmental profiles. A strong focus of my practice is helping families gain a deeper, more hopeful understanding of their child’s unique journey.

Children and youth, particularly those who are neurodiverse remain at the centre of my work, and are at the heart of my practice.  I strive to make the assessment process a positive experience—one where young people feel seen, heard, and valued. Wherever possible, I involve them actively, whether through direct conversations, choice points, or play-based approaches, helping ensure they leave the process feeling empowered.

Please note: At this time, I am not supervising practicum students or provisional psychologists through MINDset Psychology.
